Assignment: visualising the future – Appelberg and SSC showcase a rocket launch from Spaceport Esrange

In early 2023, Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) inaugurated Europe’s first satellite launch site at Spaceport Esrange in Kiruna, northern Sweden. No ready-made rockets were in place and the first launch was still a year away at the earliest.

Appelberg was therefore tasked with creating a 3D simulation of a rocket launch from Spaceport Esrange.

Solution: Using VFX, the sensation of a real rocket launch from Esrange was created

Using existing computer animated design drawings and models of rockets, launch pads and satellites, we created a visual effects simulation of a rocket launch. The film was shown at the inuguration ceremony of Spaceport Esrange, which was attended by the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, King Carl Gustaf of Sweden and the Swedish prime minister. The film received extensive coverage in news programmes and social media, both in Sweden and abroad. Today, it is used by SSC at exhibitions and other events worldwide.
